BIO

Jay Kochel is a Canberra based artist who has a background in Law and Anthropology, and more recently the visual arts, having completed his undergraduate in sculpture from the ANU School of Art in 2002. He is currently engaged in post-doctoral research into the magical fetish artefact – reliquaries, voodoo dolls, votive objects, folk magic, juju, ex voto – objects that incorporate human remains or a mimesis of the body, as a material and psychic strategy to harness a spiritual or magical affect – performing a transference of energy, heat or mana, between body and object – tuning the mind’s perception to the superstitious and supernatural.

Kochel’s work work ranges across media including installation, new media, design, sculpture and photography. His work explores methods of casting and re-appropriation of the familiar into the unfamiliar, often remodeling aspects of the found object into new materials and dialogues with other objects.

Jay Kochel is a Candidate for PhD, Graduate Studies in Visual Arts, Australian National University School of Art. He is supported by an ANU CASS PhD Scholarship.
